THE STOCKPORT CANAL (plus a bit of the Ashton)
SATURDAY 22nd MAY 2021 10a.m. start
This walk can be split into 3 sections with the option to leave and return to cars whenever suits as there will be no pub lunch and we doubt that the public toilets in Debdale Park will be open.
Section 1: Gorton reservoir to Clayton junction on the Ashton Canal.
Roger Bravey, Chairman of the Manchester & Stockport Canal Society, has kindly agreed to lead us on this section known as the ‘yellow brick road’ pointing out all the historical background to the canal and its original purposes, telling us of their latest proposals and how they intend to raise their profile and proceed with the restoration. The society have a long term aim of restoring this branch canal from Clayton junction into Stockport.
Section 2: Clayton junction to Droylsden junction:
A chance to look at Droylsden Marina and a short part of the line of the Hollingwood Branch.
Section 3: An informal walk on the Ashton and chance for a chat for those who would like to make a longer day of it.
We will meet at 10 a.m. at the public car park next to Gorton reservoir on Wall Way, Gorton, Manchester, M18 7LJ. What3words: villa.leader.beyond. The car park here is opposite McDonalds. It is possible to park on the road should the car park be full.
Please bring lunch with you if you plan to stay for the longer walk and avail yourselves of any (maybe supermarket?) toilets you can find on the way.
Notification of attendance isn’t compulsory for this walk but if you wish to ensure you’re not left behind please drop a quick text or email at some point beforehand: janandvernbrown@gmail.com Tel: 07443834997
Looking forward to seeing you again.
